All of the following: |
1. Abdominal discomfortb or pain associated with 2 or more of the following at least 25% of the time: |
a. Improved with defecation |
b. Onset associated with a change in the frequency of stool |
c. Onset associated with a change in the form (appearance) of stool |
2. No evidence of an inflammatory, anatomic, metabolic, or neoplastic process that explains the subject’s symptoms |
Subtyping IBS by predominant stool pattern |
1. IBS with constipation–hard or lumpy stoolc ≥25% and loose or watery stoold <25% of bowel movements |
2. IBS with diarrhea–loose or watery stool ≥25% and hard or lumpy stool <25% of bowel movements |
3. Mixed IBS–hard or lumpy stool ≥ 25% and loose or watery stools ≥25% of bowel movements |
4. Unsubtyped IBS |
a Criteria fulfilled at least once per week for at least 2 months before diagnosis.
b An uncomfortable sensation not described as pain.
c Type I (small, hard, and lump patterns that look like goat feces) and type II (several hard lumps that look like goat feces and form clusters) from the Bristol Stool Scale.
d Type VI (fluffy pieces with ragged edges and mushy stool) and type VII (watery, no solid pieces, and entirely liquid) from the Bristol Stool Scale.
